In The Maid of Orléans, Tchaikovsky’s sixth opera, the tale of Joan of Arc is presented in the Grand Opera style. Tchaikovsky remains true to much of the Joan legend. From her innocence and visions to to her strength in battle. We see the betrayal of Joan by her father, her persecution, ultimate execution and fiery martyrdom. Tchaikovsky’s score creates a lush impassioned sound world while also creating a nuanced musical portrait of the intrepid maiden who led the French army to victory.
