On Friday September 25th we are proud to present a special presentation of "Charlotte Brontë: To Do More and Better Things" featuring historical interpreter and History At Play, LLC Troupe member, Laura Rocklyn.

The year is 1853, and Charlotte has just published Villette, her third, and most personal, novel. This leads her to reflect on her extraordinary family, her unconventional education, and the life-changing experience in Brussels that she has just revisited in her work on this latest novel. She talks about the circumstances that prevented her from keeping her identity as an authoress a secret, as she had wished to do, and considers both the difficulties that her increasing celebrity has raised, and the unexpected opportunities that her introduction to literary circles in London has brought to her.

Charlotte shares with her audience the hardships faced by single women in her era who attempt to make a living, and possibly even a name for themselves, and how she and her remarkable sisters strove to rise above those barriers.

Laura Rocklyn is an actress, writer, and first-person historical interpreter based in Boston, MA. Laura received her MFA from The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy for Classical Acting at The George Washington University and holds a Shakespeare Certificate from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She has performed with regional theater companies up and down the East Coast, including The Folger Theatre, Kentucky Shakespeare, and the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, and she has worked as a first-person historical interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg and The Smithsonian.
